How to merge PDF files

What people usually merge

A job application with a CV, a copy of an ID and certificates. A contract and its annexes. A tax return with receipts. These are the documents that end up merged, and they are also the ones with the most personal data in them. Uploading them to a free merging service hands a stranger your full name, address, ID number and signature in one file.

What happens to the files

The tool builds a brand-new PDF in your browser and copies the pages of each file into it, in the order you set. The document properties of the originals, such as the author or the software that created them, are not carried over, because they belong to the old files and not to the pages. Bookmarks from the originals are not carried over either.

Limits

Password-protected files cannot be merged until they are opened with the password: use Unlock PDF first. There is no size limit set by the site, but the merge happens in memory, so a very old phone may struggle with hundreds of pages.

Most merge jobs are practical paperwork. You photograph five taxi receipts, download two hotel invoices and export a flight confirmation from email, and the expense system only accepts a single attachment. The same happens with visa applications, mortgage files, job applications and insurance claims: the portal wants one PDF, in a specific order, not a zip of loose scans.

Combining them takes a minute. Add the files, arrange them so the summary or cover page comes first and the supporting documents follow in the order the reviewer expects, then download one clean document. A useful habit is to name your files with numeric prefixes like 01, 02 and 03 before adding them, so the initial order is already correct and you barely have to rearrange anything.

Order, page sizes and other merge details

The final document follows exactly the order you set before merging, so double check it: a bank or embassy reviewer reads the file top to bottom, and a misplaced page can mean a rejected submission. Put the newest or most important document first unless the instructions say otherwise.

Mixing page sizes is fine. Each page keeps its own dimensions, so an A4 contract, a letter size invoice and a small receipt scan can live in the same file without distortion. If some scans are sideways, fix them with the rotate tool before combining, and if the merged result is too heavy for an upload limit, compress it afterwards. Pages are copied over exactly as they are, so merging itself never degrades quality.
