How can a PDF tool work without uploading your file?

Most PDF websites send your document to their computers, do the work there and send it back. robinpdf does it the other way round: the tool comes to your device and your file stays where it is. Here is what that means, without jargon.

Your file travels over the internet and is kept, at least for a while, on a computer you do not control. You have to trust them to delete it.

What happens when you use a tool

Check it yourself in 30 seconds: airplane mode

You do not need to know anything about computers. If there is no connection, there is no way to send your file anywhere.

  1. Open the tool you want to use, for example Merge PDF, and let the page load.
  2. Turn on airplane mode on your phone, or switch off Wi-Fi on your computer.
  3. Choose your PDF and use the tool as usual.
  4. If you get your file back, it was done on your device: without a connection it could not have gone anywhere.

OCR and Protect PDF download an extra engine the first time you use them, so try the test with another tool, or open those once while connected.

What does travel over the internet

Only things coming to you: the page itself, the tool, and for OCR and Protect PDF their engine. The site also shows ads, loaded from Google like on any other website. None of that carries your document, because your document is never sent.

Why other sites upload your file

Many of them were built when browsers could not do this work on their own, and doing it on a server lets them handle any job in one place. Today a browser can merge, compress or convert a PDF by itself. robinpdf only offers tools that can run on your device: if a job cannot be done without uploading, it is not on the site.

Questions

Is it slower than a website that uploads?

It depends on your device, not on your connection. A recent phone handles everyday documents in seconds. A very large scan on an old phone can take longer, because that phone is doing all the work.

Do the ads see my document?

No. Ads are loaded like on any website, but your file is not sent to Google, to robinpdf or to anyone else.

Does it keep working without internet?

Once a tool page has loaded, most tools keep working with no connection at all. That is exactly what the airplane-mode test shows.
